The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) estimates there are around 23,000 vacancies in the maintenance and repair sector, particularly with a growing shortage of electric vehicle (EV) technicians, mechanics, and electricians.

The IMI’s UK Automotive Vacancy Overview report indicates that only the hospitality sector has a higher vacancy rate, underscoring the critical need for skilled workers in the automotive industry.

Steve Nash, CEO of the IMI, emphasized the unique and ongoing challenges faced by the automotive sector, particularly the substantial gap between vacancies in automotive and other UK sectors.

According to Nash, addressing this issue is crucial for the future of the industry, which is why the IMI is actively encouraging more job seekers to consider roles in automotive.

The IMI’s ‘There’s More to Motor’ campaign aims to spread awareness about the diverse opportunities available within the sector, targeting school leavers, apprentices, and career changers. Despite the campaign’s success in reaching millions of individuals, Nash acknowledges that it will take time to see a significant reduction in the vacancy rate.

The IMI points out that the shift towards new automotive technologies, such as zero-emission engines, has intensified the sector’s challenges. In January 2024, 52% of job postings were for vehicle technicians, mechanics, and electricians, highlighting the urgent need for skilled professionals to support the industry’s transition to greener technologies.
