HGV driving – there’s a lot more to it than some people may think!

We all face challenges in this modern world, but sometimes it is easy to forget exactly how highly pressurised being an HGV driver can be. Here are just some of the challenges being faced today.

Driver Shortage;

Many regions of the UK are still experiencing a shortage of HGV drivers. This shortage can be attributed to a number of factors – an aging workforce, downward pressure on wages, demanding working hours – all of which make it harder for drivers and businesses alike

Regulatory Compliance;

HGV drivers must adhere to strict regulations regarding driving hours, rest periods, vehicle maintenance and cargo transportation. This can be challenging, particularly when dealing with the pressure of meeting tight delivery schedules

Long Hours & Fatigue;

HGV drivers are expected to work long hours, including nights, weekends and holidays. This irregular schedule can lead to fatigue, which not only impacts the driver’s health and safety, but increases the risk of accidents.

Isolation;

Driving long distances for extended periods can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness for HGV drivers.

Vehicle Maintenance;

HGVs require regular maintenance to ensure that they remain safe and operational. Breakdowns and mechanical issues can cause delays with the ensuing pressure on delivery schedules and of cause added expense

Technology;

Many new advancements in technology such as electronic logging devices and route optimisation software have benefitted drivers and streamlined many aspects of the industry. However, such advancements bring with them increased pressure to adapt to new technologies

Safety Concerns;

HGV drivers in particular face numerous safety risks on the roads, including accidents, collisions and even the threat of theft. Ensuring personal safety and the security of cargo is a constant concern and stress for drivers

So next time you’re on the motorway, or even in the supermarket picking up your shopping, spare a thought for the drivers who make it all possible – and the hard work and mental strength that keep this country moving!
